Annuals

Annuals by their very definition are plants that grow, flower and set seed in one growing season.  They are the plants that provide us with all the glorious colour throughout our spring, summer and into fall.  Very versatile, they are the go to solution for empty spaces in the garden bed, they bring containers to life for our front porches and back decks and they are what we use to create stunning hanging baskets.  In the not to distance past our choices for annuals colour were limited to marigold, geraniums, petunias and red salvia.  Now the colour palette is extensive and the flower types numerous which is why using these beauties are a must every season.

For your hanging basket and especially containers we have a formula for creating some symmetry.  That being said my personal opinion is the best design is the one you love and enjoy all season.

In the centre, we call that the "Thriller". In most cases annual grasses are used.  There are many types in varying shapes, colour and heights to use.  Everything from Dracena to some of the new grasses like Fibre Optics, Red Rocket, and my favourite the Tuts (King Tut and Baby Tut)  There is a thriller for every pot.

Next is the "Filler".  These are plants that fill in around the "Thriller".  There are a myriad of plants that can be used and mixing a couple of different plants is a great idea too.

And finally, the "Spiller".  There are plants that trail.  Everyone want the long, flowing hanging basket that trails to the ground.  As we tell you about the great annual plants we will identify the category that particular plant falls into.

Some of our favourite annuals.

Every year plant breeders develop "New and Exciting" plants.  Sometimes, however in their eagerness to bring these to market they don't trial them as fully as they should.  The following are a few of our tried and true favourites.

Osteosperumum also known as African Daisy are by far one of our #1 sellers for us.  Every year we grow hundreds of them and they sell out quickly.  In hanging baskets or containers they are most commonly used as "Fillers"

They come in many flower styles, sizes and colours.  The most popular for us are the Symphony Series Lemon and Orange.  There bright colour and compact size are great for hanging baskets, containers and garden beds.  They love the heat of summer, and they can even withstand the cool of early spring and into the fall.  One year it even snowed when they were outside and no harm done to them at all.

Another hugely popular annual is the Supertunia series of petunias. With their vigorous, mounding habit, these beauties are the stars of the hanging basket and container world.  With an outstanding number of colours and flower size they provide all season colour.  They can be used for fillers and spillers in your container mix as well  great in the front of the garden bed.  They are less aggressive then other petunias so they don't take over your hanging basket or container.  Don't forget to feed your annuals in your hanging baskets and containers on a regular basis.  Every third watering is a good rule of thumb.

We offer a wide selection of Supertunia colours including our signature Vista Bubblegum  (think the big pink chair)  These can be used as fillers or spillers in your hanging basket or container.
